Independent living homes or group homes are residential home settings designed for the elderly; persons with disabilities mental or physical or chronic impairments or active adults, typically age 55 and older, who want to live in a communal setting with some level of supervision or they need to downsize and enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle without needing daily assistance with personal care. This is different from the 55+ communities where the individual usually owns his/her home and might still have a very active lifestyle.

The Basics

Think of independent living as a home setting with a social twist. Residents usually require a level of supervision or assistance live in their own private units or shared units and maintain their independence while enjoying community support, amenities and social activities.

What's Included

Most independent living homes offer:

  • Assistance with self administration of medication

  • Maintenance-free living

  • Housekeeping and laundry services

  • Communal living options

  • Social activities and events

  • Transportation services

  • Meal Preparation

  • Security

Who Is It For?

Independent living suits active seniors, persons with disabilities (mental or physical) who can manage daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication management on their own but need some level or supervision or guidance, or they have no family support and want to be part of a community.

The Key Difference

Unlike assisted living or nursing homes, independent living residents don't receive personal care or medical services. The focus is on social engagement, convenience, and community rather than healthcare support.

Independent living offers the freedom to enjoy retirement years in a supportive environment where you can be as social or private as you choose.
